Motocycle Marathon

Something Different...

There are literally millions of scooters on the road here in Vietnam. It is a sight to see and utterly amazing to see how everyone is able to ride so close together without crashing! They remind me of a large school of fish, when one moves they alll just shift position to accomodate him without complaint. When the road gets full then the pavement becomes an extra lane...

The rules of the road here are very different, buses give way to NO ONE and just drive into the school of scooters to make space for themselves...and this is the norm, there is very little road rage. In SA there would be at least 20 crashed into the side of that bus...haha

Crossing the road is also nearly impossible without the lonely planet technique - "One must be confident, puposeful and move consistanly and slowly across the road" This is definately easier said than done, as the roads are so busy there is never a gap and you have to rely on the fish schooling story with the bus and just walk into them and somehow they all dodge you without complaint !!! OR as Lisa and I try to do, tuck into a locals' personal space and follow him accross the road - this requires way less bravery!
