We celebrated our return to health with a banana honey pancake and a bowl of fruit salad (semi fresh) for pretty cheap now that we're in Luang Nam Tha (the day before that we were on a strictly peanut butter sandwich diet to avoid anything potentially noodlish). We caught a bus here yesterday through all those mountains-behind-mountains on a once-upon-a-time tarred road, and the 400 kms took 9 hours!!! Potholes doesn't describe them...
Today we did a walk in the national park here, our first taste of real jungle, leeches and all! They're pretty disgusting, as soon as you stop walking they are on your shoes trying to get onto your legs, and the little buggers know how to grip on! Put a picture of one in for your benefit, if like me, you thought leeches were short, fat and black, and only found in swamps! Its the out of focus worm on the leaf...
Highlight was a lunch of Laos cuisine in the jungle, on a table cloth of banana leaves (freshly cut) and not a fork or spoon or chopsticks in sight. After the walk we had green tea in the village chief's grass house...a lovely experience!
Today was our last day of chapter 1: "5 weeks in south east asia", and our guide book "South East Asia on a Shoe-string" (renamed by us as South East Asia on a Poepstring") will no longer be our faithful companion, as tomorrow we head across the border into China... Will soon be able to tell you the answer to every traveller's consuming question: Rough Guide or Lonely Planet?
Howzit Guys
