Shanghai Sortie

Our 5 weeks in China ended with a flight to Shanghai where we spent an afternoon exploring 'the bund' - the historic waterfront street lined with old grey city buildings on one side, “stared down by the shiny new skyscrapers across the river”, perfectly stated by the Rough Guide. We ate our last chopsticks meal, with more sadness on steven's part and more gladness on mine.

The highlight of Shanghai was however without a doubt the ride to the airport the following day on the Maglev train, a magnetic field-powered 'levitating' train that accelerates to 430 kms per hour, allowing you to see the world streaking by faster than the grandstands from Schumie's cockpit for a few minutes, before slowing down to reach the airport in only 8 minutes.

We boarded the plane and waved China and Chapter 2 goodbye, with overall good feelings and memories about our fascinating time in the land of challenges and chopsticks, capitalist cravings and communism, confucianism and confusion, over the top throat clearing and out of the way kindness.
