central park: John Cusack was here
We were very generously offered a place to stay for the weekend in New York, and decided it was something cool to do with our 'japan time'. So we flew to the big apple that never sleeps (?) on the 29th, friday morning.
On the way to our apartment we stumbled across a fantastic corner pizza shop 'the two bro's' where the hugest pizza's we've ever seen were being continuously spewed out and their $1 pizza slices gobbled up by a long queue of new yorkers; construction workers, business men, police men, and backpacked-us, all finding it an equally Delicious deal.
It was such a treat to have a whole apartment to ourselves, and we hit the grocery store hard so that we could do some long missed self-catering for the weekend.
And New York is... mafia men in gold chains, people walking leashed dogs, yellow cabs, crusty over-make-upped old ladies, sirens, coffee and doughnut stalls, NYPD, skyscrapers, deli's and pizzeria's, american flags, printed and waving.
We made the most of Saturday's warm and sunny skies exploring Central Park with many other outdoor-loving new yorkers, running, walking their dogs, cycling, playing baseball and having picnics. Central Park is lovely! It's green and treed and huge and wonderful to explore, and walking through it really does feel like you're living in a movie. Walking home down 5th Avenue felt like spider man would come swinging past any second. We ended off our movie set day with a very long wait in queues to get up the Empire State building. The view was lovely, but it was expensive, and we didn't see either Meg Ryan or Tom Hanks up there.

On Sunday we went to see 'ground zero' and the statue of liberty from across the water, the former being a lot more moving then the latter. 8 years on and a huge hole in the city's skyscraper forest remains. We saw posters up showing pictures of the new 'freedom tower' that is being built there, we wonder if a garden wouldn't be a better replacement.

Lucky you !
