Had a fantastic 3 days exploring this beautiful, atmospheric and ancient city, which has all the cobbled streets and fountains and churches that we expected, and much more greenery than we expected; the city has cyprus and other dark green mediterranean trees around the outskirts and among some of the historic sights. We did a huge amount of walking, visiting all the major sights like the Roman Forum (the original historic Roman centre, now just ruins), Colosseum, Pantheon, St. Peters Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums...and a whole bunch of very grand fountains, squares and churches, designed by very grand names like Michaelangelo, Bernini and some others we've already forgotten.
It was especially interesting to be able to fit in more of the 'puzzle pieces' from Bible history (and just after) that was started during our trip to Israel last year, such as imagining the Rome that the disciple Paul stayed in for 2 years, and seeing the ancient Arch of Titus that the Romans built to commemorate the victory over the Jews in 70AD, and the Colosseum that was built with spoils and Jewish slaves from this victory.
Daryll will sympathise with the 'wearing out the soles'! We did that too there!
