Kunming and the Stone Forest

Back to the big city! Got to Kunming by bus on the 7th, had a long walk with (increasingly heavy) backpacks (have to keep reminding ourselves it serves as Inca trail training...surely) to find Camellia hostel where we'd booked a room. It was actually a part of Camellia hotel, and we made full use of the hotel breakfast buffet service for only 15 yuan (we still really do get quite excited about food).
The following day we went to see the Stone Forest at Shilin, another world heritage site, and it was quite impressive, a huge area of limestone karst formations that would not have been out of place in a lord of the rings movie. Most of our sight seeing was done lost in amongst the maze of these things, while trying to escape the hoardes of coloured-capped, flag-following and cheesy-posing chinese tour groups...but finally we found our way out into a blissfully quiet area and got to enjoy the strange scenery all by ourselves - a truly rare occaision in china!
